Looking for a new place to eat? Are you low on money? Do you want to try something new and exotic?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, Thai Kitchen fits the bill.
Thai Kitchen has been around a while (it opened in 1986, becoming the first Thai restaurant in Anchorage) but it still holds its charm.
Others have recognized the excellence that this restaurant embodies. Thai Kitchen has been awarded numerous awards from newspapers and magazines across Alaska, including: Best Thai Food of Anchorage, Best Asian Food, Best Curry, and Best Ethnic Food.
Thai Kitchen has a wide menu focusing on traditional Asian foods such as pad thai, curry, and numerous stir-fries. About half the menu is labeled as vegetarian, which is very nice for those who live the vegetarian lifestyle, or those who would rather have a lighter meal.
Upon first inspection of the menu, the dominant feature that my job-less, high-school student eyes noticed was how relatively inexpensive all the food items were. Appetizers (including fresh rolls, Thai rolls, salads, chicken wings, and others) range from merely $5 to $10 dollars. Most curry dishes are around $8, with the most expensive one being the delectable crab curry at a very reasonable $15. The dozen-or-so noodle dishes are all $8. In the main dishes section, all entrees range from $8 to $11.
I went to the Thai Kitchen with a long-time friend from out of town, and we immensely enjoyed the opportunity to try multiple dishes and share them with our other friends. We both ordered an appetizer (my friend ordered the marinated beef strips at $8, while I ordered the Thai rolls for $5.) For our main dishes, I ordered the traditional Pad Thai Noodles at $8, and my friend ordered the ginger beef–also at $8. We shared both our appetizers and our main dishes (a Thai dining tradition), which provided for quite a feast between the two of us. We split the check, and our dinner came out to about $15 each, which was very appropriate given the generous portions, delicious food and the ability to try four different items.
The encouragement to share, and the home-style cooking lend to the family-like atmosphere that the Thai Kitchen possesses.
Thai Kitchen is located at 3405 East Tudor Road, in the Tudor plaza. The restaurant is open seven days a week, with lunch being served on weekdays only. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week. Thai Kitchen closes at 8:30 p.m. every day, except for Sunday, where Thai Kitchen is open for dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
