Michael James was the only player from Chugiak High to win the first round match at the Alaska State Tennis Tournament in Anchorage this season.
James played Adam Wurster, from North Pole, in the first round, (6-0), (6-1). This earned Chugiak their first points in the tournament. James played an almost perfect match. He showed no mercy to his opponent.
“I made him cry and I felt pretty bad. I should have been a little easier on him,” said James after his match.
His winning streak soon ended after playing the number two seed, David Cotton of West High. James gave his best effort, but it wasn’t good enough. David Cotton did not let James win one single game, (0-6), (0-6).
“It was a tough match, but he deserved to win,” said James after the match.
While watching the match, it was apparent that Chugiak fans constituted the majority of the crowd. James used the fan’s energy to boost him in his final match of the 2009 tennis season.
“He fought hard until the end,” said Elysia Wilson, a third year tennis player from Chugiak.
Chugiak’s coach, Sally Cook, was satisfied with this year’s Tennis State Tournament results. Chugiak will be losing nine players next year, but that’s only half their team.
“We’ll be ready next year,” said Dylan Fullmer, a Chugiak player who will be returning next season.
