Hunting and Fishing with Zach: Trout Fishing the Kenai
The Kenai River offers some great opportunities for fly fishermen.

On a cold misty Sunday morning on the Kenai River, we were heading out to get some rainbow trout with Alaska Trout Fitters. Alaska Trout Fitters are fishing guides who only guide on the Kenai River. The river was packed full of boats angling for trout. As the mist burned off, the sun came out and it was a beautiful day.
Our guide, Billy, was showing us how to fly fish for the first time. We got the hang of it after awhile. It was very interesting learning how to do the technique. It’s a different feeling than regular fishing tackle because you can feel the fish more. I would recommend fly fishing to anyone who has not tried it before.
My friends had taken a trip with Alaska Trout Fitters before. We fished the middle section of the Kenai River. Our charter left at 8 AM and we returned at 4 PM. Rainbow trout get active this time of year because there is a lot of food in the water because of the salmon spawning. The best part of catching the rainbow was when they hit our lines. They are a fun fish to fight with a fly fishing pole. All fish were catch and release on this fishing trip. Our party landed some nice rainbows. Some were at least 20 inches long.
Alaska Trout Fitters did a great job and I highly recommend visiting their site.
There are other fishing guides on the Kenai who fly fish such as Kenai Cache Outfitters, Mystic Fishing and Alaska Fly Fishing Adventures.
If you have never fly fished before, my tip would be to go with an experienced guide like Alaska Trout Fitters and let them teach you the technique and to go during the fall when the fish are the most active.

Nice article Zach. I like fishing with Troutfitters because they really know where to find the big trout.
